This list is a partial listing of marine and freshwater phytoplankton found in the ponds, rivers and streams in South Carolina. Many are also found around the globe, but their species may vary. Phytoplankton are the base of the aquatic food web and provide nutrition for many other animals up the food chain all the way up to humans. Plankton provide almost 80% of the oxygen on Earth that we breathe by synthesizing carbon dioxide which produces oxygen as a byproduct.
