Across
3.Land.
5.An area with a medium density of trees, forming open habitats with plenty of sunlight and limited shade; may support an understory of shrubs and herbaceous plants including grasses.
7.An area of land whose soil is saturated with moisture either permanently or seasonally, areas may also be covered partially or completely by shallow pools of water. Includes swamps, marshes, and bogs and are considered the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems.
9.An aquatic ecosystem where the water is denser than both fresh water and pure water because of the dissolved salts. These salts add mass without contributing significantly to the volume. Both seas and oceans are included in this category.
11.An environment consisting of all the organisms living in a particular area, as well as all the nonliving, physical components of the environment with which the organisms interact, such as air, soil, water, and sunlight.
14.A terrestrial area dominated by various types of grasses, herbs and shrubs.
15.Water.
16.An area made up of a mix of grassland and widely spaced, scattered trees, where the trees are sufficiently small or widely spaced so that the canopy does not close. The open canopy allows sufficient light to reach the ground and support an unbroken herbaceous layer consisting primarily of grasses.
Down
1.Characterized by the polar climate, extremely cold temperatures, glaciers wherever there is sufficient precipitation to form permanent ice, and extreme variations in daylight hours, with 24 hours of daylight in summer, and complete darkness at mid-winter. They are the areas farthest from the equator receiving the least amount of sunlight and are therefore frigid. Includes the area containing the frigid zones of the polar ice caps to the start of the Timberline, resting respectively on the Arctic Ocean and the continent of Antarctica.
2.An aquatic ecosystems that includes lakes and ponds, rivers, streams and springs.
4.An area with a high density of trees and characterized by high rainfall. Undergrowth is restricted in many areas by the lack of sunlight at ground level, making it possible to walk through the area.
6.A rainforest where the leaf canopy is destroyed or thinned, and the ground beneath has been covered by a dense, tangled growth of vines, shrubs, and small trees.
8.An area with a high density of trees, with a large closed canopy which provides extensive and nearly continuous shade.
10.A region that receives an extremely low amount of precipitation, less than enough to support growth of most plants. This condition can also be created when an area looses more water by evaporation than falls as precipitation.
12.Defined by it’s high altitude, and located above the tree line often with harsh, windy conditions and poor soils. These conditions cause pants in this habitat to adapt in ways such as dwarfed and twisted slow-growing trees, rosette structures, waxy surfaces, and hairy leaves.
13.The natural environment where a particular species of animal, plant or other type of organism lives.
